[NEWS] Sunmi vs. Wonder Girls’ Sunmi

Girlgroup WonderGirls members SunYe, YooBin, YeEun and SoHee talk about their feelings on SunMi’s leaving the group.

The 4 WonderGirls members had a meeting with their WonderGirls fan union on 8th February and the fan union released the details of the meeting through their fancafe at about 11pm.

According to the representative of the fan union, SunMi’s training was shorter as compared to the other members since her debut she had missed out a much of her schooling life. And the members constantly felt SunMi’s regrets about it after they had their American debut.

They told the fans, “But our responses were the same as fans when it was revealed that SunMi will be stopping her promotions as WonderGirls for the time being. At first we panicked, and said that she will regret this, but after awhile we calmed down and gave our support for her decision.”

They said, “And we know that SunMi is not one to make such decisions lightly, she has been thinking about this for a while, and discussed it with the members and company.”

And the WonderGirls member also explained that rumours of the company pushing SunMi to leave the group is groundless. They said, “Debuting in the States was a dream which all the members have dreamed of. Even though we were afraid with all the saying that it is too early for our American debut, we really wanted to go to the States.”

They added, “The company also do not wish for its singers to be like puppet singers who just listen to whatever the company tells them to do.”

The members also talked about their feelings on SunMi temporarily stopping promotions as part of the WonderGirls. Especially for SoHee, who is of the same age as SunMi and stopped her high school education for her singer career together with SunMi. SoHee said, “It is true that it is hard to be away from the family as a young student, so I understand how SunMi feels. With that said, I believed that she has thought things out since it is her choice after all.”

The WonderGirls also emphasized, “Even though ‘WonderGirls SunMi’ is important, individual ‘SunMi’ is also very important. Since this is her decision on her own life, if us members are to hold on to her, later on when she regrets, we don’t know how we are going to be responsible for that.”

Also, “There are people who are criticising like ‘This is the decision you made in the beginning, why are you calling it ends now?’. We hope people don’t look at it this way since hardship means differently to every individual and they deal with them differently.”

The 4 members of the WonderGirls had the meeting with 5 fan union representative from about 2pm in the afternoon that day.

Meanwhile, on 23rd January it was announced that SunMi will leave WonderGirls for the time being. With that, SunMi will be with the WonderGirls till the end of the month. And from March, she will return to Korea to start preparations for her college life.

And JYP trainee HyeRim (Lim) will be taking over the empty position in the group. Already on 4th February, she had her first official performance as part of the WonderGirls in China for an event.

[NEWS] I Love Thailand

THEY love Thailand so much that they have returned to meet their fans – barely half a year after their last visit.

We’re talking about the Korean boyband 2PM, made up of six fresh-faced lads. 2PM has been selected by the Thai government-led tourism campaign, I Love Thailand, as representatives of foreign artistes.

Their energetic combination of funky hip-hop, acrobatic dances and athleticism have attracted many fervent female followers in Bangkok. All their albums have sold like hotcakes in Thailand.

This time, they were back to promote their latest full-length release, titled 1: 59PM.

When U-Weekly made a trip to cover 2PM’s album launch in Bangkok last month, over 10,000 fans mobbed the pretty boys.

2PM – which comprises Kim Junsu, 22, Nichkhun Buck Horvejkul and Ok Taecyeon, both 21, 20-year-olds Jang Wooyoung and Lee Junho, and the youngest Hwang Chansung, 19 – made two appearances at shopping mall Siam Paragon.

The first, on 31 Jan, was when the boys graced a national singing competition as special guests.

Hit songs

When they started singing their hit songs Again & Again/I Hate You and Heartbeat, the girls screamed and sang along to every line.

At one point, five out of the six members leapt from the stage to interact with the crowd.

It was the same situation a day later, when 2PM met the press at the Siam Paragon cineplex.

Nichkhun, who is of mixed Thai-Chinese origin, impressed reporters with his fluent command of Thai.

Little wonder why the Thai media has dubbed him the nation’s ‘pride and joy’.

He has also been selected by the Tourism Authority of Thailand as the face of its newest campaign, Come To Thailand: Let’s Take A Break.

Fans present at the press conference also bought a cake to celebrate the birthdays of Junso, Junho and Chansung – the trio happen to be January and February babies.

As a parting note, the lads promised everyone that they will be back very soon to hold a large-scale concert.

The donations from international fans not only include Japan, but also those from China, Thailand, and all of Asia, which shows that Yunho’s popularity can be felt throughout Asia.

Under Yunho’s name, the fans in China donated supplies for students within Korea who come from poor backgrounds, and there were also various donation and volunteering activities that took place in Thailand. The donations and volunteering activities of the Korean fans are also such.

This year, on Yunho’s birthday on the 6th, fans used his name to make various donations as a form of wishing him a happy birthday, and one of the fundraisers alone raised an amount of over KRW$40,000,000.

[NEWS] Not Thinking At All

Girlgroup T-ara is said to have been a disgrace for saying the wrong things and wearing over-revealing clothes at a volleyball court recently.

NH Agricultural Association 2009∼2010 V League men and women’s all star match opened on 7th February in Seoul JangChung Gym. With the best volleyball players coming together in one place, T-ara was invited to do the congratulatory performance that day.

The girls were greatly welcomed by the audience, but amidst their entrance, many families were taken aback by the girls revealing their thighs through their mini dresses and shiny stockings, and their dance for the performance with all the children watching on.

The OSEN reporter at the event said, “The dresses were too short. I don’t know if they have forgotten that they are at a Sunday volleyball match event with many children present.”

The girls also made a mistake in what they said during the event, they are supposed to be there for congratulatory performance at a volleyball all-star match, but during their speech they quoted the wrong name for the event.

It can be seen that with the recent topics about girlgroup’s performing costumes and MV content, the girls’ performance that day had brought more people’s attention to the issue.

[NEWS] Is There Something To Hide?

MANILA ― K-pop girl group 4Minute ended their first Philippine tour Sunday after promoting their first mini-album, “For Muzik,” in the Southeast Asian nation where K-pop is gaining popularity.

In Manila, 4Minute held shows in shopping malls, had autograph signing events for fans, and appeared on TV variety programs from February 5 to 7.

“For Muzik” contains the hit songs “”Hot Issue”, “Muzik” and “What a Girl Wants” and was released in the Philippines on CD-DVD format.

The members of the idol group ― Hyun-ah, Ji-hyun, Ji-yoon, So-hyun and Ga-yoon ― met the Philippine press on February 5.

However, besides arriving an hour late for the press conference, the girls were barred by the organizer of the event from answering personal questions, particularly regarding Hyun-ah and her past association with K-pop girl band the Wonder Girls.

Hyun-ah was an original member of the Wonder Girls but had to quit the group just six months after they debuted in 2007 due to her deteriorating health.

On January 22, JYP Entertainment announced that Sun-mi, another member of the Wonder Girls, was quitting the group to resume her studies in South Korea.

With Hyun-ah and Sun-mi experiencing similar misfortunes with the Wonder Girls, The Korea Times asked Hyun-ah if she would consider going back to the Wonder Girls if Park Jin-Young, owner of JYP Entertainment, asked her to.

However, even before the interpreter could translate the question, a staff member for the organizer stopped her from answering the question.

The press also failed to get Hyun-ah’s reaction on Sun-mi’s decision to quit, when the organizer again prohibited her from responding.

The questions 4Minute members did answer were mainly about their diet and lifestyle.

Answering a question from The Korea Times on their health, 4Minute admitted that they are on a special diet to maintain their sexy image as K-pop idols.

But they said they were having a hard time controlling their diet in Manila since they love the food.

When asked about their friends outside the group, 4Minute said they are close to the members of K-pop groups BEAST and f(x).

4Minute and BEAST are managed by Cube Entertainment, an affiliate of JYP Entertainment.

4Minute debuted in Korea last June with the digital single “Hot Issue” which became a hit and earned the group two Rookie of the Month music awards. “For Muzik” was released in Korea last August.

They received the Golden Disk Newcomer Award alongside girl group T-ara last December.

This year, 4Minute won the Newcomer Award at the 16th Korea Entertainment Arts Awards and the Popular Artist Award at the 2010 Asia Model Awards.

Hyun-ah is currently appearing on the TV variety show “Invincible Youth” (a.k.a. “Incredible Youth”).

[NEWS] Coca Cola vs Pepsi

The brother groups of JYP Entertainment, 2PM and 2AM, have become the blue chip of the advertisement world. Advertisements for cola have been known to pick only the hottest stars for their models.

On the 8th, an associate stated that 2AM has recently signed on to a contract with Pepsi Cola. There have also been rumors that since Coca Cola, a rival company, held 2PM as their model, they, too, have decided to use their brother group 2AM for their own. 2PM has already finished their recording at the end of January with a one year contract. 2PM’s advertisements will go on air towards the mid, or end of this month. The two brother groups have been attracting attention as to who will receive the most love.

[NEWS] Entering The Limelight

Singer Hae Lim, who has replaced Mimi of the Wonder Girls, made her first public appearance as a member of Korean pop quintet over the weekend.

An official at their agency JYP Entertainment (JYPE) explained Saturday that Hae Lim joined the other members on stage during a party in China, where the K-pop group is promoting a product.

[NEWS] Copycat? Or Original?

Newcomer singerDia is more known to many as ‘teenage Park Bom’ or ‘Korea’s Beyonce’.

She debuted last year with the single ‘0carat’ and recently in January she released her 2nd single ‘0.5carat’ which was well received by music fans, and she was given the nickname of ’scary newcomer’ with her powerful vocals. But amidst that, Dia reveals that the nickname has brought her much tears and hurt. This new singer said there has been some misunderstanding about her, which had attracted mean comments from netizens.

Dia is just 18 years old this year, but through her recent interviews, she has shown a very dignified self unlike most new singers.

“After my first performance, I was shocked at the responses. The MCs for one of the music shows introduced me as the singer who is trying to sing like Park Bom unnie, and after the performance it became hot issue on portal sites. Of course it is good to be more known all of the sudden. But because of all the mean comments like my style is similar Park Bom unnie’s style or I’m trying to imitate Park Bom, I was very hurt.”

“Actually after the failure from the previous single, I lost all the anticipation. I wanted so much to sing and perform on stage, but I can’t, and everyday it gets tougher. I was so depressed.”

But Dia said that she did not just stop there. She worked harder and aimed for success. With the strong belief in the saying ‘*인간만사 새옹지마’ she stood up strong again.

“I thought (Park Bom unnie) I should be more thankful. I want to thank Park Bom unnie if I get the chance to meet her. And also through this, I wanted to do my best to show my own styles and capabilities. My wish for the year is to be known as my name Dia instead of ‘the 2nd who-who’. (smile)”

[NEWS] Super Super Questions

If you can rattle off the names of the 13 cuties comprising the popular Korean Pop Group Super Junior (SuJu for short) without missing a beat, then you are a Certified KPop Devotee.

Try it (at random): Leeteuk, Eunhyuk, Han Geng, Yesung, HeeChul, Sungmin, Donghae, Kangin, Kibum, Siwon, Ryeowook, Shindong and Kyuhyun.

Got it? Congratulations!

Of course, you know that not all the members were discovered in Korea in a relentless recruitment that took almost a decade, starting in the late ’90s, around Asia. Auditions kicked off in the early 2001. Han Geng was discovered in Beijing and Kibum in L.A. The group was completed only in 2006, with Kyuhyun as the 13th recruit.

SuJu outnumbers Slipknot by four members. SuJu membership equals the members of Backstreet Boys, *NSYNC and April Boys put together.

Observed a KPop fan, “The (SuJu members) sing and dance, and kiss flowers, and giggle, and apply astringent,” and even dress up in girlish attires but make no mistake about it, they are not gay. “They are just whiny people screeching songs about heartbreak and pain,” added the KPop fan. “They just want to give out love and free hugs…”

Initially known as Super Junior 05, the group took a bow on Korean television in 2005 with its debut album SuperJunior05 (TWINS) that sold over 28,000 copies.

The group’s second album, Don’t Don, was released in 2007, followed by the third, Sorry, Sorry in March 2009.

Good news for SuJu fans: The group is coming to Manila as part of its Asian Tour: Super Show 2 set for April 10 at the Araneta Coliseum.

Your third album, Sorry, Sorry, is well received all over Asia and with it you also have gained a bigger fanbase which makes you the greatest boy group in Asia. So what can we expect from your fourth album?

“We are really glad to have an opportunity to reach as many listeners as we can all over the world with Sorry Sorry. It drew huge support from the fans as well as other music lovers. We will try our best to live up to that enthusiasm. Please be ready for our new album which surely will show another best performance and colorful music styles. Thanks.”

(For all the members) Do you guys ever sleep? A lot of you regularly attend and record shows, fly to different countries for guestings, film dramas. But you all still manage to smile and look happy. What’s your secret in having such a positive outlook in life despite all the hardships?

“We consider the tight schedules as the proof of the fans’ love and support. We are enjoying it. We sometimes feel exhausted and yet as soon as we feel the fans’ encouragement, we forget about all the fatigue. Definitely, the love and support of the fans are the motivation for us to run and smile more.”

(For Siwon) A lot of your fans notice you take photos of members all the time with your camera. Would you consider releasing a photobook of your pictures soon?

“Glad to hear that! At the moment I’m taking pictures as just my hobby to keep the remembrance of the people around me, so they are not that professional at all but just keeping the pieces of my private memories. If I have the chance to learn more with my camera, and if there is any opportunity to release a photobook, I may go for it (or may not).

(For Ryeowook) Given an option to release a solo album, would you go for ballads or something different like a song-dance album like Insomnia, the one you will perform at the Super Show?

“If I have the chance to release a solo album, I would try to produce the album with all my best efforts to represent more of my personality and color.”

Do the members have any favorite artists that are not Korean?

Ryeowook: I listen to all kinds of music. I like Craig David a lot, so I decided to do a solo performance of Insomnia in this Super Show 2. I hope you like it.

What does Super Junior think of SHINee?

“SHINee is like the good younger brother whom we consider very talented and special in terms of musical ability. We actually do a lot of sports together and got to know each other better. We have been watching them even before their debut, we feel very proud of them whenever we see them trying their best on and off the stage.”

Who among the Super Junior members has the best command of English?

“Probably it’s Siwon because he’s always reading English newspapers and books, so he might be the one who could speak English the best.”

Have you ever thought that you would visit the Philippines?

“We have heard that Sorry, Sorry has reached the top of Philippine charts, so we were really glad and wanted to visit as soon as possible. We are a bit nervous but very excited to think of visiting Philippines and we like to see all the fans during the Super Show 2 concert.”

What type of girls do you like?

“We all have different tastes. Shindong likes someone who is cute and adorable, and Siwon likes someone who he can communicate with very well. Leeteuk likes someone who is innocent and understanding; Kyuhyun and Sungmin like someone who is nice and charming. But ideal types of girls tend to change a lot, so I think that it changes depending on what kind of people you meet.”

How do you feel about being with Super Junior and being so famous all over the world?

“I’m happy that I’m one of the members of Super Junior. The teamwork is good and individually the members are good. Also, we are happy that not only Koreans but many other people outside Korea are cheering for us. If we get the chance, we want to visit more countries and meet all kinds of people. To all the fans who are giving much love even from abroad, thank you again.”

If you were not with Super Junior, what do you think you would be doing?

“It depends on each member. If I were not with Super Junior, how would I be? Hmmmm…I think this is a difficult question. I think we would be just ordinary students or maybe not members of Super Junior but still a celebrity. But we think being Super Junior is the best. We can’t think of anything else.”

What are some of your most memorable performances?

“The most memorable one is the Asian concert tour. There’s a time when we feel that we are united with the audience. We enjoy every show in every city. I think the second half or the encore part is the most exulting moment. We feel really good with all our songs and we feel really good when our audience responds to our performance positively. That’s when we feel our best.”

What are your favorite songs and why?

“We love all the songs, but the performance of Sorry, Sorry is very memorable. It is the creation of the global dancer, Nick Bass. He visited Korea and coached us in our choreography. We learned many things by being together and we had so much fun because it’s new compared to the performance that we’ve done before, and there were many changes in the choreography. And also, not only Korean but many other Asian fans loved our song and the choreography of Sorry, Sorry. There were parodies and many UCC videos regarding that. We love it as much as many people loved our performance.”

Why do you think Super Junior is a huge success?

“This is a difficult question since we are still on our way to our goal. First, our first step was something new. There were not much groups that had lots of members like us back then, and there were no group that sings, acts and at the same time works as a DJ, MC and in many other fields. So I think that is why as soon as we had our debut, we had a chance to show our individual appeal and that each of us was active in different fields. I think the reason why not only Korean but other Asian fans love us is because we are active both as a group and individually. It creates a synergy effect.”

(Note: The Super Junior Concert at the Araneta Coliseum on April 10 is produced by PULP LIVE headed by Vernon Go. Tickets are priced at P7,500, P6,500, P4,500 and P1,000, available at PULP [telephone 687-1709] and through TicketNet [911-5555].)

In a broadcasting, she seems to talk with a sucked-in mouth like a child asking for food, which led to her nickname “ooh jjoo jjoo.”

Meeting JiYoung in the latest company DSP media rehearsal, we asked her feelings of 2009, and she answered, “At the time of ‘Pretty Girl’ and ‘Honey,’ I was only known as the new member of Kara, but as people saw my performance in ‘Wanna’ and ‘Mister,’ my fans and popularity increased. Especially when people danced our “butt dance” throughout the televisions, our popularity grew.

Kara’s popularity also increased throughout talent programs and radio shows. With various cable shows like “Kara Bakery” and “Invincible Youth, Idol Show Season 4,” Nicole’s appearance in premier of “Star Golden Bell,” and in other programs like “Joh ah suh (Good)”, “Infinity Challenge,” and “Intimate Note,” they became very famous.

As the male idols comment how JiYoung is going on the “right” direction with her cute and pure image, it seems like she have a potential to appear in other programs like drama and musical.

[NEWS] Tagalog Me

MANILA, Philippines – Their chinky eyes and singsong voices are distinctly Korean. And they say salamat, mahal ko kayo, astig and bongga with a different accent.

You can tell how much K-pop band 4 Minute wants to fit in, now that they’re in Manila for the first time to promote their debut mini-album For Muzik (MCA Music, Inc.).

Sohyeon Kwon, Hyunah Kim, Jihyun Nam. Jiyoon Jeon and Gayoon Heo Jiyoon wish they could learn more Tagalog words, but their short stay in the country prevents them from doing so.

The girls are so busy, they will return to Korea right after the last leg of their promo tour today, 5 p.m. at SM North EDSA Annex Event Center.

“We want Filipinos to invite us again,” they chorus. “We will memorize more Tagalog words next time.”

That’s welcome news for members of the band’s fan club which attended their presscon the other day at Shangri-La Hotel. The six fans who came to see their idols up close even shelled out funds from their student allowance to print white T-shirts with the words 4 Minute proudly emblazoned on them.

Berna, who went straight to the hotel after her classes, sang a few lines from 4 Minutes’ hit song What a Girl Wants, with her fellow fans.

And what, exactly, does a girl want these days?

Nothing spectacular to us past uh, the teen years, actually. For the girls of 4 Minute, it’s something as simple as the freedom “to hold hands with a guy I like.”

Their answer shouts girl empowerment — something every teenager will say yes, yes, yes to. Figures why the song is getting heavy airplay in music channels and radio stations.

What a Girl Wants, plus two more hits off their album, Hot Issue and Muzik are whisking the girls to places they have not been to, like the top position in KKBox, Taiwan’s number one music spot.

And, just like most celebrities, the girls observe that “we don’t get enough time to do things teens usually do.”

“It’s hard to roam around town,” they explain. “So we just stay home.”

It’s a sacrifice, especially for typical teens like them who find shopping, watching movies and eating out simply irresistible. But it’s a sacrifice they’re willing to make — together.

The girls have gotten so close one of them even said she would like to be with her band members on stage if she were given only four minutes to live.

But isn’t the name 4 Minute a misnomer since the band has five members?

“We’ve got four minutes to give our all every time we perform. That’s why we’re called 4 Minute,” they explain. “And we give our best every single minute.”

Their equally young audience seems to agree. The fans buy 4 Minute’s album, dance to their music, applaud their videos.

“Music is more powerful than any kind of communication,” the girls of 4 Minute declare. “It goes beyond what language can do.”

Despite the language barrier, which an interpreter tries her best to break, 4 Minute is making its point loud and clear.

On February 5th, it has been reported that girl group, T-ara member, Soyeon’s Swine Flu has been cured.

MNet released a statement saying that “Yesterday at 11PM, we went to the hospital and learned that Soyeon has been cured from the Flu”. Last week, Soyeon was diagnosed with the H1N1 Virus while filming T-ara’s cameo appearances on KBS drama God of Study.

This was one of the reasons as to why T-ara’s promotional activities for ‘Like the First Time’ were cut short.

“For having these kinds of health issues, I’m very sorry to all the fans.” said Soyeon, “In the future, we promise to work harder and better on the music and cheoreography in our upcoming repackaged album, to repay the fans”.

Before the concert, 50 Filipino fans will get to see FT Island members during the fan meeting at the PICC.

This will be FT Island’s second visit to the Philippines. Last September, the boy band went to Cebu to shoot the music video for their Japanese single “Raining.”

Their Cebu trip became a memorable experience for the band members as they were in the province when typhoon Ondoy (international code name Ketsana) hit the Philippines.

FT Island is composed of Lee Hongki, Choi Jonghoon, Lee Jaejin, Song Seunghyun and Choi Minhwan.

The group debuted in 2007 and released their first album “Cheerful Sensibility.” The same year, FT Island received numerous awards including Golden Disk’s Popularity and Best New Artist Awards, and Best New Group in the Asia Song Festival.

Last December, the pop group released its fourth album, “So Long, Au Revoir,” that contains the song “Raining.”

The FT Island Manila 2010 Showcase is organized by Spin Manila and fangirlasia.com in cooperation with Datz Entertainment and FNC Music.

Tickets are priced at P2,500, P3,500 and P5,000 and are available online at www.fangirlasia.com.

[NEWS] The Other Side Of Life

It isn’t hard to find an idol group member featured in variety programs. In many different show programs, the necessity of an idol star is highlighted, and it gives another chance to the idol stars so that they could show off another side of them beside the music stages.

Especially in these days, along with the rise of real variety programs, the “made” image of an idol is slowing being unveiled. However, no matter how much they “mess up” their image on these shows, back on stage, they become the role models of many.

The “blue chip” of the entertainment industry these days is 2AM’s JoKwon. In many different entertainment programs, JoKwon earned the title of “Kkap-Kwon” through his craziness. Also in MBC ‘We Got Married’, he also earned the image of a cute husband. Along with the news that he joined the season 2 of ‘Family Outing’ which is being broadcasted on February, fans are excited to see what kind of image he will bring on screen.

He earned the image of a cute, adorable, and little husband through a “fake” marriage with GaIn. He gained the image of being nice, but cute among the fans of the show. However, when he moves on to the stage, he turns into a serious musician. In the recent album, the expression on JoKwon’s face is straight and his voice is yearning. Even during one episode of We Got Married, when JoKwon cracked his voice during a rehersal of the song ‘We Ended Up Loving’, he was heart broken and at some points almost showing tears due to the mistake.

Girl groups are also appearing in the variety programs causing the difference from the singer and the real person. On ‘We Got Married’, Brown Eyed Girls member GaIn shows the image of an easy going, older wife, unlike the sexy image on the stage. She also shows off the boyish fashion in the fake marriage program, unlike the tighter outfits she wears in the music programs.

The newcomers Yoona from Girls Generation and TaecYeon from 2PM are also supposed to show off a whole new different side in ‘Family Outing Season 2′. Being their first time on a real variety program, one acquaintance stated that their actions didn’t quite show their idol image. The PD for ‘Family Outing Season 2′ stated, “Actually Yoona’s first image is a very pretty one. But once we started filming, she had a 4-D and curious image. Also, despite the curious image, she didn’t fall back between Kim WonHee and Shin BongSun.”

TaecYeon, who has the ‘beastly idol reputation’ will be showing off the ‘boy’ image for the filming of ‘Family Outing Season 2′. The staff of Family Outing stated, “We thought that TaecYeon might show us the more manly side compared to JoKwon, but once we started filming he showed off a more of the boyish and cute image. A stage is just a stage, but in the real variety program, it will show the actual sides to TaecYeon besides the strong image he had until now.”
